Almag has released the first in a series of "Tech Tips", covering the practical aspects of using powder magnetic cores for storage inductors and high frequency differential EMC suppression chokes The first of these, "How are powder cores different?", is now available

Covering the fundamental differences between powder cores and ferrites, it describes the "soft-saturation" characteristics that can be used to make chokes that are both smaller and less costly.

Further Tech Tips in the series will give an overview of the different families of powder cores, and how they can bring benefits to designers of power supplies, motor drives, electronic ballasts and phase-angle or sinewave light dimmers.
