The article "Introduction to interference suppression" is now available from Almag by e-mail Based on a paper originally presented at an IEE colloquium, this article explains the difference between common-mode and differential interference, and gives examples of the two very different types of filter circuit needed to give effective suppression

As both types of interference occur side by side in most equipment, combined suppression circuits are also shown, including a cost-effective way of using common-mode choke leakage inductance to give some differential suppression by the simple addition of two capacitors.

Included is an explanation of the differences between common-mode and differential inductor construction, with a review of the constraints on the types of magnetic core that can be used.
