Exertris, the world's first interactive gaming workout cycle, is the first Microsoft Windows XP Embedded application for UK distributor Abacus Polar.

Exertris, the world's first interactive gaming workout cycle, is the first Microsoft Windows XP Embedded application to be announced by Abacus Polar, Windows Microsoft distributor in the UK Looking much like a conventional exercise cycle, Exertris links physical exercise with games such as Space Tripper, Orbit or Gems

A patented gearbox mechanism and software algorithms transform the user's pedal power into on-screen action; the faster the user pedals, the greater their chances of winning.

This new exercise experience is the concept of Exertris CEO Dr Gareth Davies.

"Everyone wants to be fit, but most of us find the activities quite tedious and give up after a short while", he explains.

"I wanted to stop exercise feeling like exercise, by combining it with modern video gaming experiences".

Time to market was vital, both for the initial product delivery, and for continually adding new games to the Exertris experience.

James Briant, software director at Exertris, explains why they chose Windows XP Embedded.

"The Exertris concept is all about the gaming experience; we needed a platform that would allow us to go ahead and develop great games without drawing on the team's resources to fix computing and networking issues".

Briant is an accomplished designer of console games, and was working in the USA with Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto when Davies, a friend since university days, contacted him to discuss his ideas.

Craig Langley, Microsoft Embedded Business Manager at Abacus Polar, added, "XP embedded is Microsoft's best embedded OS yet, especially in terms of its stability and overall networking features.

This, combined with its competitive licensing terms, has lead to huge customer interest".
