Designers of compact power supplies for portable applications can now specify a varistor that offers the same surge protection as a disk device that is half as big again in area.

Designers of compact power supplies for portable applications can now specify a varistor that offers the same surge protection as a disk device that is half as big again in area, following the release by Abacus Polar of a new range of square varistors Varistors of the new Epcos EnergetiQ series from Abacus Polar are square instead of disk-shaped, allowing them to handle maximum surge currents in a minimum of space

For example, the EnergetiQ Q14K275 varistor with an edge length of 14mm has the same electrical data as the S20K275 disk with a diameter of 20mm, which is over 50% greater in area.

Varistors are widely used as input protection for switched mode power supplies (SMPS), and the new style is likely to prove popular as designers try to evolve ever more compact supplies to support portable products.

Energy absorption is important because in varistors, in contrast with simple P-N junction diodes, it is distributed over the entire volume of the component.

EnergetiQ varistors are available with edge lengths of 14 and 20mm, and cover a voltage range from 130 to 680V.

They are ideal for applications where headroom is at a premium.

If an insertion height of 20mm is too high, the EnergetiQ Q14 with an edge length of 14mm but the same electrical properties can be used.
