Trade-in deal offers free MCU
development kit
Abacus Polar is offering new Renesas Technology R8C/Tiny development kits free in exchange for customers' old 8bit evaluation kits for major alternative architectures.
For the lowest-cost design starts, Abacus Polar is offering new Renesas Technology R8C/Tiny development kits free in exchange for customers' old 8bit evaluation kits for major alternative architectures The R8C development kit comprises a Renesas starter kit (RSK) evaluation board, which is also fitted with an LCD panel as standard to aid testing and troubleshooting of software

Embedded Windows adds fun to the gym
Exertris, the world's first interactive gaming workout cycle, is the first Microsoft Windows XP Embedded application for UK distributor Abacus Polar.
The Renesas E8 on-chip debugging interface, which connects easily to the USB port of a host computer, is also part of the kit.
Further utilities provided include a 64Kbyte code limited version of the Renesas R8C compiler, as well as the Renesas High-Performance Embedded Workshop (HEW), which gives debugging, editing and project management functionality.
Driver code and application notes are also provided for fast and error-free development.
Abacus Polar's starter kit swap offer highlights the availability of the R8C/Tiny series for cost-sensitive MCU applications requiring high integration and low-power consumption.
Customers need only to trade-in an existing 8bit evaluation kit to qualify for a free R8C starter kit.
The promotion covers the kits supporting three selected ranges of devices, the 20-pin - R8C/1A and 1B, the 32-pin R8C/11-13 and the 52-pin - R8C/24 and 25.
The Renesas R8C/Tiny series of microcontrollers addresses cost-sensitive applications by providing a 16bit CPU core and compact 8bit bus architecture with large memory.
Available on-chip peripherals ease integration and reduce component count in a wide range of industrial, professional and domestic applications.
The R8C core has 89 instructions and 1Mbyte address space, allowing fast execution of complex operations and recompilation of code originally targeted for Renesas M16C MCUs to maximise investment in any existing code.
This provides a cost-effective solution for designers looking to release processing bandwidth in the main CPU of an existing design, by offloading selected functions such as housekeeping or other low-level routines to an R8C companion device.
Migration from an 8bit R8C to 16bit M16C solution is also straightforward, supporting continuous product evolution to increase functionality.
The R8C core can operate at up to 20MHz, with power-saving modes to maximise the power budget in embedded applications.
Low voltage operation, from 2.2 to 5.5V, supports use in low-power applications.
