ABB in drive for motor or wall mounting
The ACS 160 frequency convertor, the newest addition to ABB's Comp-AC range of low-power drives, offers rugged construction and unrivalled flexibility.
The range extends to 22kW, featuring manual brake release as standard.
Improved braking torque means that a large moving mass, for instance a loaded crane or conveyor, can be stopped quickly and accurately.
It will also help ensure rapid shutdown in emergencies.

AC drives range to new applications
ABB has extended the range of one of the key elements in its ACS 600 drives family, by introducing new IGBT supply unit frame sizes.
Despite improved braking performance, lining wear has been reduced and the service intervals increased.
The brake motor is a single or two speed motor fitted with a mechanical, electrically actuated brake.
The new brake has an increased disc area in combination with stiffer connection to the motor shaft through a polyamide hub.
This has improved the braking torque, for instance from 7.5 to 12Nm in frame size 71 (0.09-0.75kW), or from 60 to 85Nm in frame size 112 (1.5-5.5kW).
Brake pad life has increased two and a half times in frame size 71 and by 30% in frame size 112, reducing maintenance.
Vibrations and noise from the brake have been eliminated by the new hub, which reduces the number of parts in the brake assembly.
The polyamide hub can withstand forces in excess of 900Nm.
The brake motors are based on ABB's new M3000 aluminium motor, which in its original design qualifies for the highest European efficiency class, EFF1, in sizes from 11kW and upwards.
Although brake motors are exempt from the EU-wide regulations on motor efficiency, the improved efficiency reduces operating costs, particularly in applications with long running hours where braking occurs infrequently.
Brake motors provide controlled deceleration of loads as well as holding torque at standstill and power loss.
They are typically used in safety applications, such as passenger and goods lifts, cranes and cable cars, as well as other applications where quick and precise stopping is required, for instance machine tools, feed equipment, conveyors, winding machines and many other processes.
The motors are available either with DC or AC operated electromagnetic disc brake, using asbestos free brake pads.
The AC brake has a shorter actuating time and is suitable for applications with a high braking frequency.
The DC operated brake provides gentle brake application and allows variation of the brake actuating time.
Softer braking can also be achieved by reducing the spring force by 25, 50 or 75%.
In the event of power loss, the brake is automatically applied by spring pressure.
A spacious terminal box enables fast and easy installation and the motors are available with oil seal for gearbox applications.
The M3000 brake motors are available as single-speed 3000rev/min motors from from 0.18 to 22kW; as 1500rev/min motors from 0.12 to 18.5kW; as 1000rev/min motors from 0.09 to 14 kW; and as 750rev/min motors from 0.055 to 7.5kW.
Two-speed motors are also available.
