Quad-band module targets M2M communications
Wavecom's Quik Q2686 is billed as the industry's most compact quad-band GSM/GPRS module.
Acal Semiconductors has released the industry's most compact quad-band GSM/GPRS module.
Measuring just 40 x 32.2 x 3.9 mm, Wavecom's Quik Q2686 is the first in the Q26 family of long-life wireless modules.
It combines Wavecom's unique OS 6.60 operating system with GSM/CDMA interchangeability and an extended life-span of up to ten years which paves the way to future Edge and 3G developments in industrial machine-to-machine applications.
Powered by a new ARM9 processor, the Quik Q2686 integrates a large memory and Wavecom's OS 6.60 operating system which features an advanced version of the Open AT software environment.
This offers lower power modes, new APIs (application programming interfaces), improved connectivity for USB and remote monitoring ports and internet package for enhanced customisation and cost advantages as well as a fast time-to-market.
The Quik Q2686 also has greater DOTA (download over-the-air) capacity, making remote e-maintenance and new feature enhancements a reality.
Software upgrades to application equipment can now be implemented while the equipment is in the field, without ever having to return it to a service centre, thereby reducing the total cost of ownership.
Commenting on the announcement, Martin Kemp, Sales and Marketing Manager, RF and Wireless products, Acal Semiconductors explained: "Virtually every machine can be benefit from the addition of communication features".
"The combination of Wavecom's unique OS 6.60 operating system, compact size and GSM/CDMA interchangeability with Acal's expertise in bringing RF (radio frequency) products to market, will enable customers to develop products today which will take them well into the future".
The Quik Q2686 starter kit, also available from Acal, includes Open AT software development tools, a development board, handset, quad band antenna, power supply as well as serial and power cables and documentation on CD.
Acal is also offering Wavecom's entry-level WISMO Quik Q24 modules for wireless local loop phones.
Fully compatible with the entire range of Wavecom Quick modules, the WISMO Quik Q24 provides GSM voice, SMS and data/fax functions and allows users to create their own user interfaces and embed them directly on the Q24 platform with the Wave-com Open AT software development kit.
