European deal on network security processors
Network security processor specialist Hifn has signed an exclusive pan-European distribution and representative agreement with Acal.
Building on Lantronix's proven XPort serial-to-Ethernet/IP technology, XPort AR integrates all the computing and networking functions required to web-enable up to three edge devices into a single RJ45 package: a 120MHz DSTni processor, embedded web server, a full network operating system with TCP/IP protocol stack and 10/100 Base-T/TX Ethernet connection with true IEEE802.3af-compliant pass-through power over Ethernet (PoE).
The XPort AR matches security levels typically found in data centres by integrating SSH (Secure Shell) and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption to prevent hostile internet attacks such as denial of service (DoS) and port mapping.
Support for cipher technologies includes AES, 3DES and RC4 as well as for hashing algorithms such as SHA-1 and MD5.

Quad-band module targets M2M communications
Wavecom's Quik Q2686 is billed as the industry's most compact quad-band GSM/GPRS module.
Designed for easy integration into enterprise networks, the XPort AR enables edge devices to gather, process and communicate information and then take appropriate preprogrammed actions.
The Evolution OS uses industry-standard tools for configuration, communication and control.
These comprise Cisco-like command line interface (CLI) and XML-based configuration and setup records.
These make the configuration of the device transparent to users and administrators and are editable with a standard text or XML editor.
The XPort AR also supports RSS to automatically send real-time device information over the network to a database which adds intelligence to the networked device without creating an additional load on the network email system.
Acal Semiconductors' Martin Kemp explains: "It is increasingly important for new edge devices to operate with higher levels of intelligence and autonomy whilst offering security which is comparable to the enterprise networks to which they are attached".
"They must also offer easy configuration via the same open standards used by traditional servers, routers and switches".
"TheXPort AR addresses all of these critical needs to introduce a new era of device intelligence".
In addition to a powerful 120MHz processor, the XPort AR integrates up to three serial ports, 13 configurable GPIO pins, a Flash file system with 4Mbyte of available memory, 1.25Mbyte of SRAM and supports a serial datarate of 230Kbit/s.
Additional flexibility is provided through integrated I2C, SPI, USB and CANbus interfaces, external interrupts and a timer input.
XPort AR is designed to add network functionality in applications such as security control, real-time asset tracking, point-of-sale transaction automation terminals, secure energy metering and networked PoE access control.
