Cape Range Wireless has increased performance and significantly reduced cost by using Altera's Stratix series of FPGAs for its Arcadian wireless communications system The Arcadian system extends the range over which telephone companies can deliver voice and data services to remote customers

By using Stratix FPGAs, Cape Range Wireless was able to cut its component costs by 40% and reduce their board size by 25% compared with its previous solution.

"After an exhaustive evaluation of high-performance programmable logic offerings, we chose Altera's Stratix devices for our Arcadian Wireless platform", said Kenneth Margon, Managing Director, Cape Range Wireless.

"The Stratix architecture enabled us to achieve the highest integration, providing us with a performance boost and a significant cost savings".

"In addition, Altera's expertise in wireless communications as well as the ability to migrate our design from an FPGA device into a HardCopy structured ASIC for high-volume production, set Altera apart from the competition".

Cape Range relies on Stratix FPGAs to perform baseband processing, which is a critical part of wireless infrastructure products.

Baseband processing requires performance-intensive digital signal processing (DSP) functions such as error correction, modulation, encoding, and decoding.

High-density Stratix devices provide the ideal combination of processing power and programming flexibility required to integrate many of these functions into a single device.

The seamless migration path to a low-cost HardCopy structured ASIC for high-volume production further extends the value proposition that Altera's solutions offers to customers.

"Altera programmable logic is the ideal choice for many crucial functions in wireless infrastructure products, such as baseband processing", said Arun Iyengar, Senior Director of Altera's Wireless Business Unit.

"Our devices can outperform fixed-function and off-the-shelf components while retaining the flexibility to address future upgrades and emerging standards".

"Innovative equipment developers like Cape Range are leveraging these advantages to bring the benefits of mobile communication to people everywhere".
