Employers who recruit engineering graduates with the latest skills in electronic and electrical engineering are set to benefit from a new way of teaching at one of the UK's best universities A newly opened suite of laboratories will ensure that engineering graduates from the University of Bath hone their skills on industry-standard equipment and solving simulated industrial problems

The newly opened Agilent Suite of labs will transform the way students learn complex technical subjects and allow each student to progress at their own pace in an interactive and supportive environment.

They mark a move away from dry, 'talk and chalk' teaching methods, and towards teaching methods that make more use of problem solving.

The new facility has been made possible through collaboration with Agilent Technologies and with the award of a Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) funding initiative on teaching and learning.

"These labs are the best in the country", said Professor Peter Watson, Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, "You won't find a better first year undergraduate facility in the UK".

The new laboratories form part of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath, which has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its students and research.

The department demands high A-level grades, but has found that the increasing diversity in students with mathematics and physics A levels can make it difficult to achieve common standards, with some students struggling to learn new material while others cover familiar ground.

The suite allows students familiar with the subject to apply their knowledge in challenging ways and those learning it afresh to take things at their own pace.

The new suite will accommodate up to 96 students on a range of courses, including innovative joint programmes in communications engineering and psychology, launched this year.

These are taught in conjunction with the Department of Psychology at Bath and explore elements of both electronic and human communication.

Psychology is now the fifth most popular subject for study at UK universities, and attracts 80% female students, a neat balance to engineering, which attracts 80% males.

The new learning space was opened on 12th November by Don Foster, Liberal Democrat spokesman for Trade and Industry and MP for Bath.

"I am genuinely impressed by what you have set up here", said Foster.

"It is wonderful to see the concept of resource based learning being developed using the technologies that are here.

If we have the opportunity to allow students to develop, in real situations, solutions to problems that are presented to them, then we truly are creating a student that will be needed by companies". Request free introductory details about products from Avago Technologies ...
