Agilent Technologies is supplying its HSDL-3002 infra-red (IR) transceiver with remote control capability to NEC for use in that company's full-colour display mobile phone.

With the Agilent HSDL-3002's IR port, the NEC N504iS mobile phone provides cordless communications functions such as exchanging pictures with other handsets.

In addition, the transceiver can also control TVs and VCRs up to 6m away from the handset.

A preinstalled application supports remote control of Sony, Sharp and Panasonic televisions.

For other devices, users can download remote control data configurations from an NEC-operated i-mode site or, as the N504iS is a smart remote, it can record signals from existing IR remotes to control other entertainment devices and home appliances.

The NEC N504iS - introduced by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in late November 2002 - weighs only 105g with dimensions of 95 x 48 x 19.8mm when folded.

It is equipped with a 1.9in, 4096-colour STN LCD and supports data transmission speeds up to 28.8Kbit/s.

Its 310,000-pixel CMOS image sensor camera includes a revolutionary "access reader" OCR function, which can capture alphanumeric data such as e-mail addresses, URLs and phone numbers on business cards.

The Agilent HSDL-3002 is the industry's first small-form-factor IR transceiver module that combines IrDA-compliant low-power serial infra-red operation at speeds to 115.2Kbit/s with IR remote control transmission.

Its dimensions are 2.7 x 9.1 x 3.65mm, and it is specifically designed for low power consumption with a shutdown current of just 10nA, helping to extend battery life in mobile devices.
