CDMA handset demand drives duplexers
Agilent Technologies is now shipping more than 1 million of its FBAR (film bulk acoustic resonator) duplexers per month.
Milestone for low-profile FBAR duplexers
Agilent Technologies has shipped its 10 millionth film bulk acoustic resonator duplexer since release of the product in the winter of 2001.
Demand has been so strong that Agilent increased its shipments in September to more than two million FBAR duplexers per month.
Duplexers play a critical role in CDMA handsets and data cards by separating incoming communications from outgoing communications to allow for simultaneous two-way voice or data transmission.
Traditionally, duplexers have been the second largest component in a wireless phone, after the battery.
"Our FBAR duplexer component has become an industry standard and is now inside 80% of new US PCS handsets", said Bryan Ingram, Vice President and General Manager of Agilent's Wireless Semiconductor Division.
"The FBAR size and performance advantage is highly valued by our customers.
And because FBAR technology allows filters to be manufactured using a semiconductor process, Agilent plans to further reduce the duplexer's size and integrate it with Agilent E-pHEMT power amplifiers and detectors to create miniature RF front-end modules.
These modules will allow handset manufacturers to increase battery life and offer even more features than available today".
Agilent FBAR duplexers have been designed into more than 55 mobile terminal platforms, including feature-rich, next-generation PCS band camera phones and smartphones.
At a height of less than 2mm, Agilent's FBAR duplexers are the only duplexers that meet the maximum height limit for CDMA data cards.
In terms of performance, FBAR duplexers provide better power handling, insertion loss and selectivity characteristics than surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices.
Agilent is ramping production of its second generation FBAR duplexer for delivery to tier-one manufacturers.
The smaller form-factor device has a 66% smaller footprint (5 x 5 x 1.4mm) than the current FBAR duplexer. Request a free brochure from Avago Technologies ...
