Agilent Technologies and Cypress Semiconductor Corp have combined to produce a combination USB-PS/2 reference design kit for high-performance corded optical mice.

The kit gives manufacturers the technical instructions and firmware needed to quickly implement a new optical mouse design.

The optical mouse reference design is based on the Cypress CY7C63743A-PC microcontroller and the Agilent ADNS-3060 optical mouse sensor, which provide superior performance and tracking control compared with previous-generation, LED-based optical mice.

The Agilent ADNS-3060 LED-based optical mouse sensor provides excellent tracking control and high-performance operation for corded optical mice.

The sensor uses a self-adjusting frame rate that automatically matches to surface characteristics for optimum performance.

In addition, the ADNS-3060 offers: 3.3V operation; power-down current consumption of 90uA; a maximum clock frequency of 24MHz; a maximum speed of 40in/s at 6400frame/s; and resolution of up to 800 count/in.

The Cypress CY7C63743A-PC is an 8bit RISC microcontroller with an integrated USB serial interface engine.

High-performance, low-cost human interface peripherals such as optical mice can be implemented with a minimum of external components and firmware effort.

Communication between the CY7C63743A-PC microcontroller and the ADNS-3060 sensor is accomplished through the integrated serial peripheral interface.

The combination USB-PS/2 microcontroller also offers: a 12MHz internal CPU clock; 256byte of RAM; 8Kbyte of EPROM; built-in clock oscillator and timers; and programmable drive strength and pull-up resistors on each I/O line.
