Hot-pluggable transceiver for Fibre Channel
Agilent Technologies has announced volume availability of its 2Gbit/s small-form-pluggable (SFP) fibre-optic transceiver for Fibre Channel storage area networks (SANs).
The company has now set up the Agilent Asia Mobile Development Centre in Seoul, Korea, which will provide a new base for R and D, marketing and applications support close to Agilent's growing number of Asian customers.
This represents another move in the company's steady semiconductor business expansion into the mobile handset market.
The combination of Wavics' patented CoolPAM power amplifier technology and Agilent's miniature FBAR (film bulk acoustic resonator) filters is expected to give Agilent a highly differentiated product that exceeds competitive solutions and further extends Agilent's market leadership in power amplifiers.
The Agilent Asia Mobile Development Centre will develop innovative semiconductor solutions and speed product development for OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), ODMs (original design manufacturers) and mobile handset manufacturers based in Korea and the Asia-Pacific region.
The centre will focus on mobile-technology R and D, marketing and applications support.
Its initial staff will include more than 50 engineers, including the engineering team from Wavics.
"Korea is a mobile technology leader, and its universities are graduating large numbers of highly educated and skilled electrical engineers", said Young Sohn, President of Agilent's Semiconductor Products Group.
"We selected Korea for the Agilent Asia Mobile Development Centre because it offers some of the world's best technical resources".
"It also places us close to our mobile handset customers, where we can better serve them and help define tomorrow's innovative, feature-rich handsets".
The centre will concentrate on Agilent's mobile handset component portfolio, which includes CDMA and W-CDMA power amplifiers.
The R and D team will also create next-generation front-end modules that integrate an Agilent power amplifier with one of its miniature FBAR duplexers.
This will offer mobile phone manufacturers a significant reduction in printed circuit board space, enabling smaller, thinner clamshell handsets.
The new centre also plans to offer customisation and development services, including reference designs and software.
