The Agilent Technologies ICM illumination and colour management system has been included in Coretronic's reference design for 30in LCD flat-panel TVs.

The Agilent Technologies ICM illumination and colour management system has been included in Coretronic's reference design for 30in LCD flat-panel TVs.

The reference design enables TV manufacturers to quickly offer next-generation LCD TVs using red, green and blue LED backlighting.

Backlighting with RGB LEDs provides 25% richer colours than LCD TVs using fluorescent backlighting.

The 30in diagonal LCD TV reference design combines Coretronic's RGB LED backlight module with Agilent's ICM system.

It offers LCD flat-panel TV manufacturers resolution of 1280 x 768 WXGA and brightness of 550cd/m2.

The LCD panel colour saturation achieves 106% of the colour space defined by the National Television System Committee (NTSC), which is responsible for setting television and video standards in the USA.

The backlight unit colour saturation is rated at 123% of NTSC.

"Agilent is the only company that provides a standard 'off-the-shelf' colour management solution for LCD backlighting", said Fred Huang, Vice President of Coretronic's Backlight Business Unit.

"By combining our expertise in LCD backlighting modules and flat-panel TV designs with Agilent's innovative illumination and colour management system, we offer the market a proven design that provides sharper, more natural colour tones for their LCD TV displays".

"We are pleased that Coretronic has selected our ICM solution for its LCD TV reference design", said Lee Soo Ghee, Vice President and General Manager of the Optoelectronic Products Division in Agilent's Semiconductor Products Group.

"Together we are enabling a new wave of LCD TVs that will allow consumers to see all colours of the rainbow brighter and more clearly for a more exciting TV viewing experience".

The Agilent HDJD-JB01-8831A illumination and colour management (ICM) system consists of the HDJD-J822-SCR00 colour management controller and the HDJD-S831-QT333 tricolour photo sensor.

The Agilent ICM system enables white backlighting (using the combination of red, green and blue LEDs with feedback control) and makes it possible to maintain constant colour and brightness over the lifetime of the display.

This level of control combined with the increased colour spectrum is not possible with any conventional technology.

ICM offers dynamic RGB tuning and dynamic colour changing capabilities.

By using Agilent's colour management feedback system, the light output produced by an RGB LED array maintains its colour over time and with variations in ambient temperature.

The desired colour can be specified using a standard CIE colour space.
