Colour-management system wins bronze
An innovative colour-management system for backlighting LCD flat-panel TVs has earned a bronze award at the eighth annual Asian Innovation Awards.
Agilent Technologies' innovative colour-management system for backlighting LCD flat-panel TVs has earned a bronze award at the eighth annual Asian Innovation Awards.
The awards, presented by The Asian Wall Street Journal in association with the Global Entrepolis at Singapore networking event, are Asia's most prestigious honours for individuals and companies who create new ideas, methods or technologies, or who apply knowledge in unique ways to improve quality of life or productivity.
Agilent's team of eight optoelectronics engineers, with more than 40 years experience between them, in one year developed the world's first illumination and colour management (ICM) system.
The Agilent ICM system solves the problem of flat-panel LCD TVs showing only 75% of true colour tones and gradually losing colour richness and brightness over time.
ICM delivers 25% richer colour tones than traditional LCD backlighting by using an array of red, green and blue LEDs.
Because ICM is a closed-loop feedback system, it monitors the hue (colour) and intensity (brightness) of the LEDs 100 times per second and then automatically adjusts the light output to ensure the right colour point is achieved.
This technology breakthrough allows television manufacturers to achieve true-to-life colours and maintain a set colour point over the life of the TV display.
The Asian Innovation Awards recognise gold, silver and bronze winners based on level of creativity or degree of innovation, quality of execution, and the potential impact on the quality of life or productivity.
A total of 130 entries from 14 countries were received this year.
"We are delighted that our colour management system has been awarded a bronze by the prestigious Asian Innovation Awards committee", said Lee Soo Ghee, Vice President and General Manager for the Optoelectronic Products Division in Agilent's Semiconductor Products Group.
"I congratulate our engineering team for solving the problem of how to provide sharper, more natural colour tone LCD TV displays".
"With an ICM-equipped TV, consumers can now see all colours of the rainbow brighter and more clearly for a more exciting viewing experience".
