Quad PIN diodes simplify attenuator
design
A new series of pi-connected quad PIN diodes simplify the design and lower the costs of voltage-controlled diode pi attenuators operating over the 300kHz to 3GHz frequency range.
Avago Technologies has released a series of pi-connected quad PIN (positive-intrinsic-negative) diodes in lead-free SOT-25 surface-mount packages These matched quads simplify the design and lower the costs of voltage-controlled diode pi attenuators operating over the 300kHz to 3GHz frequency range

Hot-pluggable transceiver for Fibre Channel
Agilent Technologies has announced volume availability of its 2Gbit/s small-form-pluggable (SFP) fibre-optic transceiver for Fibre Channel storage area networks (SANs).
The devices offer the combination of high linearity to minimise signal distortion, and a wide attenuation range to provide high dynamic range.
Avago's HSMP-3816 and HSMP-3866 pi-connected diode quads are intended primarily for applications in the wireless infrastructure, including basestations and repeaters, and cable and satellite television.
They are also appropriate for other applications operating below 3GHz calling for high linearity combined with a wide attenuation range performance.
Because the four diodes are adjacent dice from the same wafer, they offer closely matched RF performance.
"These quad PIN diode attenuators broaden our product portfolio and give customers the high linearity and attenuation range they need for their demanding, next-generation wireless designs", said Steve Saw CY, Worldwide Product Marketing Manager for silicon diode/RFIC products in the Wireless Semiconductor Division at Avago Technologies.
"They also save valuable board space and manufacturing cost".
With +1.2V control voltage, at 1GHz, the HSMP-3866 features +30dBm IIP3 (third-order input intercept point), up to 36dB attenuation, insertion loss of 3dB and -18dB return loss (all typical).
With +5V control voltage, at 1GHz, the HSMP-3816 features +45dBm IIP3, up to 38dB attenuation, -3dB insertion loss and -22dB return loss (all typical).
An application note and demonstration boards are available to help customers maximise the performance of voltage-controlled pi attenuators using these devices.
The HSMP-3816 and the HSMP-3866 are available in bulk on 3000-piece 7in tape and reel, and 10,000-piece 13in tape and reel.
Samples and production quantities are available now from Avago Technologies' direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners. Request a free brochure from Avago Technologies ...
