Intelligent backlight system is hot stuff

The HDJD-JB01-8831A illumination and colour management (ICM) system for backlighting LCD flat-panel TVs has been named one of EDN's Hot 100 Products of 2005.

EDN magazine's technical editors analyse and compare the industry's product introductions and make their selections at the end of each year.

The Avago Technologies ICM system solves the problem of flat-panel LCD TVs displaying only 75% of true colour tones and gradually losing colour richness and brightness over time.

ICM delivers 25% richer colour tones than traditional LCD backlighting by using an array of red, green and blue (RGB) LEDs.

Because ICM is a closed-loop feedback system, it monitors the hue (colour) and intensity (brightness) of the LEDs 100 times per second and then automatically adjusts the light output to ensure that the right colour point is achieved.

This technology breakthrough allows television manufacturers to achieve true-to-life colours and maintain a set colour point over the life of the TV display.
