Amphenol-Tuchel has added a solenoid eject version to its current Superflat Pushmatic chip card connector series, with outer dimensions not much larger than the standard ISO7810-sized card itself.

Amphenol-Tuchel has added a solenoid eject version to its current Superflat Pushmatic chip card connector series, with outer dimensions not much larger than the standard ISO7810-sized card itself The growing market for cashless payment systems, e-purses, health service medical records cards and mobile appliances is prompting manufacturers like Amphenol-Tuchel to evolve its smart-card connector designs

Increasingly low-profile products, with functionality aimed at EMV payment applications are hot news in the world of smart cards.

Amphenol's low-profile Pushmatic was designed specifically to match these requirements.

Cards according to ISO7816 are inserted manually into the reading position.

Cards are then mechanically locked to prevent the user from pulling the card out before the transaction is finished.

After completion, the card-locking arm is released by a solenoid and the card is partially ejected so it can be removed by the user.

During the insertion cycle, one switch signals that the card is in its final resting position and another confirms that the locking arm is fully engaged.

In the case of a power failure the locking arm can be released manually.

An optional opening in the bottom of the smart card connector allows foreign debris, such as coins etc, to fall through.

The data connections to the contact system consist of a flexprint with 1mm centres.

The contacts themselves are 'landing contacts' which means that the contacts stay protected inside the body of the device until the card is almost in its final position before making contact.

This design means the contacts are protected from potential damage and are self-cleaning for long working life.

Engineers working with smart cards will like to know that SmartCardExpo is approaching.

Organised by Turret-Rai on the 4th and 5th of February 2003, the show is colocated with Electronics World Expo at Earls Court.

ASP Infotec will be showing the latest Amphenol products at the show.
