Allegro MicroSystems has expanded its European integrated-circuit design operations by moving into a new 470m2 centre at Musselburgh, near Edinburgh in Scotland.
The new European Design Centre, which currently employs 12 electronics design engineers, acts as a global resource for Allegro MicroSystems, working closely with the company's US engineering teams in Worcester, MA, and Willow Grove, PA, on the development of mixed-signal integrated circuits for power-management and motor-control applications.
The centre is fully equipped with the latest Cadence EDA design tools and Hewlett-Packard workstations, and also houses a test laboratory and PCB prototyping facilities for evaluating product performance under practical conditions.
Director of the Design Centre, Peter Morris, is enthusiastic about the investment that Allegro has put into the UK: "At a time when many multinational semiconductor companies are scaling down their UK and European commitments, the Allegro management have shown their faith in the quality of local people by increasing their commitment", he comments.
Products currently in development at Musselburgh include low-dropout regulator ICs for the latest generation of battery-operated handheld computing devices, plus stepper-motor ICs whose applications range from the automotive market to high-speed digital projection systems.
