The Sanken SPF5014 is a single high-side driver integrated circuit designed to provide linear current control of solenoids in microcontroller-based industrial applications.

The Sanken SPF5014 is a single high-side driver integrated circuit designed to provide linear current control of solenoids in microcontroller-based industrial applications.

The device incorporates the high-side switch function, a current-sense resistor, a current monitor output, and a sample-and-hold function.

It is produced using Sanken's BCD process, which integrates bipolar analogue, CMOS logic and DMOS power functions on a single monolithic chip.

Pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) and "hold" inputs are compatible with 5V CMOS and TTL logic, and can be driven directly from a microcontroller.

The output driver is a high-side N-channel DMOS switch, with an onboard charge pump being used in the gate drive circuit to drive the DMOS device.

Overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown are also included.

The inclusion of a sample-and-hold function in the current monitor output means that the device can easily be interfaced with an external analogue/digital convertor so that current data can be read into the microcontroller.

Linear current control is realised by simply adding a flywheel Schottky barrier or fast-recovery diode in parallel with the solenoid.

The IC can linearly monitor the current in the built-in resistor only when the PWM input terminal is low.

This corresponds to the current recirculation time when the DMOS switch is off and the flywheel diode is on.

Temperature is precisely compensated on the current monitor output, so that high accuracy (+/-5%) is achieved over the temperature range -30 to +125C.

There are two types of hold timing.

One is automatic, where the current data is held for a period of 500-650us before the "hold" signal is input into the PWM pin.

The other allows the current monitor to be held for a user-determined time by inputting hold signals.

Current data measurement at more than two points is possible.

The device is supplied in an SPF-16 package with an internal heat slug for increased thermal conduction.
