New from Allegro MicroSystems Europe, the A3211 micropower, ultra-sensitive Hall-effect switch IC features an inverted output compared with the company's established A3212 device The combination of a 2.5-3.5V operating voltage range and a unique clocking scheme reduce the average operating power requirement to less than 15uW with a 2.75V supply

Unlike other Hall-effect switches, either a north or south pole of sufficient strength will turn the output on.

The device includes, on a single silicon chip, a Hall-voltage generator, small-signal amplifier, chopper stabilisation circuitry, a latch, and a MOSFET output.

Advanced BiCMOS processing is used to take advantage of low-voltage and low-power requirements, component matching, very low input-offset errors, and small component geometries.

The chopper stabilisation circuit uses dynamic offset cancellation to reduce the residual offset voltage normally caused by device overmoulding, temperature dependencies and thermal stress.

The polarity independence and minimal power requirements means that these devices can easily replace reed switches for superior reliability and ease of manufacturing, while eliminating the requirement for signal conditioning.

In addition, the micropower operation makes these sensors especially suited to operation in battery-operated, handheld equipment such as mobile telephones, MP3 players, toys, pagers, and palmtop computers.

Four package styles provide magnetically optimised solutions for most applications.

Miniature low-profile surface-mount package types EH and EL (0.75 and 0.50 mm nominal height) are leadless; LH is a leaded low-profile SMD; and UA is a three-lead single-inline package for through-hole mounting.

Packages are available in lead (Pb) free versions (suffix -T) with 100% matt tin-plated lead frame.
