A high-efficiency charge-pump white LED driver IC combines excellent accuracy and matching with flexibility in dimming and control in a very compact package.

The A8435 from Allegro MicroSystems Europe is a high-efficiency charge-pump white LED driver IC which combines excellent accuracy and matching with flexibility in dimming and control in a very compact package The new device, which is targeted at portable electronics display applications, uses a proprietary 1x/1.5x control scheme to match up to four output currents to within 0.5% LED

A low 1x/1.5x transition voltage threshold maintains optimum operation in the 1x mode for higher overall efficiency, helping to prolong the operating life of the lithium-ion batteries typically used in these applications.

The A8435 operates over an input range of 2.7 to 5.5V and delivers up to 30mA for each of the four regulated current sources.

It can deliver a total output current of 120mA, meeting the requirements of most lithium-ion battery-powered white LED backlight applications.

Outputs can also be combined for flash or torch applications.

The device also offers flexible options for LED current driving.

The LED current can be set by one of four different methods: choosing an appropriate setting-resistance value; 2bit parallel control with three levels; PWM control; or one-wire serial pulse input to enable the part and set up to 11 dimming levels from 100% down to 5%.

Comprehensive protection circuitry includes short-circuit and overvoltage protection as well as thermal shutdown, while a soft-start feature is used to limit the inrush current.

The A8435 is available in a very low profile 3mm-square MLP-16 package (A8435EES) with a thickness of only 0.75mm.
