New from Alpha Micro Components, the AMC1802GSXLA is a dual-band GPRS/GSM embedded radio modem module.
Running TCP/IP and PPP protocol stacks on board allows the AMC1802GSXLA radio module to operate independently of any Windows-based operating system.
Key areas set to benefit from the new modem include Eastern European countries, who have an excellent GSM network but poor telephone infrastructure, and the USA, where the modem will prove extremely useful when current products based on the analogue AMPS radio system are replaced in the next two years by GSM-based solutions.
Measuring just 90 x 56mm, Alpha Micro's highly compact modem module supports both the existing GSM radio standard and the new GPRS 'always on' radio connection.
Unlike a GSM connection, which is billed on a cost-per-second basis, GPRS is charged on the basis of cost-per-byte transferred.
Once a GPRS connection has been established with the service provider's host, the module may remain online at no extra cost to the user, ready to receive or transmit data.
Features include voice support and front-end sensitivity -107dBm typical.
PPP, IP, TCP, PAP, and CHAP protocols are supported over the GPRS network in addition to modem emulation up to V.32 over GSM.
The module runs from a single 5 or 12V supply and drives a 5V serial interface with baud rate selectable up to 115,200bit/s.
The radio SIM module may be sited either on the user's motherboard or on the AMC1802GSXLA module itself.
Control of the modem is via a standard AT command-driven serial interface with extended register settings for the GPRS option.
In this way, the AMC1802GSXLA may be seen as a simple dial-up analogue modem to any existing user application.
