Serial-to-Ethernet adapter gains 128bit security

An Alpha Micro Components product story

128bit standards-based Rijndael encryption is now available as an optional extra on the award-winning Lantronix XPort serial-to-Ethernet adapter.

128bit standards-based (AES) Rijndael encryption is now available as an optional extra on the award-winning Lantronix XPort serial-to-Ethernet adapter, available exclusively in the UK through Alpha Micro Components.

This will come as welcome news to OEMs and design engineers working in the electronic point of sale (EPoS), security system and access control sectors, where data security is a top priority.

Enclosed within a ruggedised RJ-45 package, the thumb-sized XPort has already established itself as one of Alpha Micro's most popular franchised product lines since its introduction in April 2003.

The module contains all the hardware and firmware required to quickly and easily web-enable any serial device, including: 10Base-T/100Base-TX auto-sensing Ethernet connection; a mature, robust operating system; embedded HTTP-compliant web server; programmable e-mail alerts; and an extensive networking protocol suite including TCP/IP stack.

"XPort has been a very successful product line for us as it allows manufacturers to enhance their profitability by reducing the engineering risk and costs associated with adding networking capabilities to their products", explains Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director, Alpha Micro Components.

"The addition of Rijndael encryption can only enhance its popularity".

Graham Arnott, Product Specialist, Alpha Micro Components, points out: "Rijndael is a very flexible, or 'portable', encryption algorithm and can be easily implemented in a variety of operating environments including Windows, Linux and even embedded protocols.

This is an important feature for many of Alpha Micro's customers who are developing machine-to-machine devices which are not based on traditional PC-type architecture".
