The Sagem XS200 is a novel digital modem housed in a revolutionary ball grid array (BGA) package, for use in ultra slim portable applications Measuring in at just 33 x 38 x 3mm and weighing just 10g, the XS200 is one of the smallest modules available on the market to offer both GPRS class 10 and GSM functionality

Networking system boosts security
Alpha Micro Components' MatchPort b/g Pro meets the data security needs of applications such as medical records and government data transmissions and financial transactions.
Tiny module suits mobile networking
The Sagem HiLo's very low power consumption (less than 1.5mA in idle mode) and guaranteed 3.2V minimum power supply make it suitable for battery-powered devices.
Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director of Sagem's exclusive UK distributor, Alpha Micro Components, comments: "Sagem is ahead of the game".
"They realise there is great demand for small portable communication devices and they have responded to this demand with the XS200".
The small and lightweight features of the XS200 make it ideal for embedded designs such as point of sale terminals, PDAs and other portable applications that may have space limitations.
By embedding the XS200 modem module into an electronic device, it can become GPRS enabled with minimal disruption to the existing product.
Sagem has taken the next step in modem design and has applied BGA (ball grid array) packaging to the XS200, allowing it to be used more like a component than a module, eliminating the costly and complicated connectors.
Design engineers can place the XS200 straight onto a PCB, making the design not only more streamline and saving board space, but easier to manufacture, cheaper and hardwearing.
Some of the other features of the XS200 include: GRPS Class 10 with PBCCH Support, Data, SMS, MMS, STK and USSD; voice support; a choice of two triband variants, with 850 or 900MHz in addition to 1800 and 1900MHz; and a power supply range from 3.3 to 5V.
Applications for the XS200 include: handheld terminals, laptops, palmtops; electronic funds transfer (POS and ATM); vehicle locations and fleet management; vending machines; monitoring and metering equipment; and billboards, signs and other displays.
Papakyriacou concludes: "With the requirement for electronic communication products to be mobile, streamline, more powerful and quite often handheld, Sagem can offer the perfect solution".
"Alpha Micro's customers will reap the benefits of this advanced technology".
