Alpha Micro Components has introduced the AMC170XT, one of the smallest, feature enhanced GSM and GPRS data modem available The AMC170XT is not just incredibly small, but comes as a complete "off the shelf" and ready-to-go OEM solution

By running PPP and TCP/IP protocol stacks onboard, the data modem can simply be integrated into the design of any industrial application.

Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director, Alpha Micro Components, comments, "We have done all the hard work for the design engineer! The AM170XT allows OEMs to simply integrate the solutions without any need for long and costly design processes.

Whilst supporting the existing GSM radio standard it provides reliable wireless data communication at speeds of up to 53.6 Kpbs in GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) coverage areas." The AMC170XT is controlled by a simple Hayes AT command set, and to the end user looks and feels like any standard dial up modem.

With its in-house team of GPRS-expert design engineers, Alpha Micro can tailor the modem to fit into many designs, which can dramatically reduce the time to market, resulting in a true finished solution for machined-to-machine (M2M) communication.

The AMC170 is suitable for a whole host of applications.

The added GPRS connection makes it ideally suited to Point of Sale terminals and remote monitoring of equipment, which involves sending and receiving small amounts of data on a regular basis.

For example a security system at a bank branch fitted with an AMC170XT, can be contacted and monitored remotely.

The security system can send messages on aspects such as battery status of if someone is trying to tamper with it, to a head office on the other side of the country.

At the same time the head office can send information to the security system to sound the alarm, or switch off.

The AM170XT can be embedded into a range of other applications, including remote telemetry, asset management, lottery terminals and gaming machines, vending machines, call logging systems.

The AMC170XT has taken into account the functionality needs of many different design engineers.

There will also be options, which will allow flash upgrades in the field, as well as an array of added specifications, such as Tri-Band 900MHZ/1800MHZ/1900MHZ for global deployment, V.21, V.22, V.22BIS, V.23, V.32 modem emulation, On board SIM card reader, Internal or external antenna, 3.3V Serial interface.

Papakyriacou concludes: "The AMC170XT is a true ready-to-go data modem.

It really couldn't be easier to add GPRS functionality to any electronic device, resulting in M2M communication in record time.

You name it, this modem has it and if there is something extra a customer needs, Alpha Micro has the answer.
