Flash memory, like a computer hard drive is a nonvolatile memory, which remembers data even when the machine is turned off.
Product or programme upgrades can be sent to the device by GPRS allowing the Trac unit to upgrade itself.
The option of added Bluetooth gives devices within close proximity of each other the ability to talk, advancing machine-to-machine (M2M) communication.

Alpha Micro Components' MatchPort b/g Pro meets the data security needs of applications such as medical records and government data transmissions and financial transactions.
Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director, Alpha Micro Components comments: "Machine-to-machine communication is going to be the next big thing in electronics".
"We have added Flash upgradeability to the series, which means kit does not need to be recalled or engineers no longer need to visit the devices in the field to carry out upgrades - data can be sent to the devices via GPRS allowing the units to upgrade themselves making them future proof".
"Bluetooth also allows machines to communicate and collect information from each other, without going through a central hub".
For companies requiring an always-on GPRS data connection, the Trac series of products provides an ideal solution.
For courier services and taxi cab firms, the GPRS connection gives drivers real-time information about their next fare or delivery, as well as facilitating credit card transactions.
Alpha Micro's series of Trac devices can be connected to virtually any device with a serial RS232 port, opening up endless possibilities of M2M communication.
Alpha Micro excels at producing turnkey solutions, eliminating the costly design process and providing cutting-edge technology for legacy systems.
Papakyriacou concludes: "The applications of M2M communication has yet to be realised".
"Imagine this; within a production plant two machines fitted with Trac devices are producing the same product".
"One machine isn't as efficient as the other and via their Bluetooth connection tells the other to increase production, whilst the GPRS connection allows data from both machines to be analysed remotely from anywhere around the globe - that's true M2M communication".
