PoE device server gains faster operating system
Visitors to this year's Cartes exhibition in Paris will be able to witness the power of the world's smallest power-over-Ethernet server.
Visitors to this year's Cartes exhibition in Paris (15th to 17th November 2005) will be able to witness the power of the world's smallest power-over-Ethernet (PoE) server from Alpha Micro Components on Stand 3B 091.
This new version of NetPort, Alpha Micro's plug and play serial-to-Ethernet cable adapter, enables any device or machine with a serial port to become network and Internet enabled in an instant.
With the addition of PoE, NetPort can be used to power devices such as chip and PIN authorisation keypads, dataloggers or any other piece of equipment which can run from a 15W power supply.
The new version of the external NetPort adapter - which is only marginally larger than a matchbox - comes with a new TCP/IP engine and updated operating system.
This faster and more robust operating system allows the NetPort device to be customised to a greater degree than its predecessor, enabling solutions to be configured to a customer's exact specification.
In particular, NetPort PoE is now able to offer SSL and SSH authentication as a direct response to the security and financial sectors need to protect end users data.
NetPort has received a great deal of attention from the point of sale (PoS) industry, as the solution to enable PoS terminal manufacturers to add Ethernet capability to existing EMV approved products without the need for lengthy redesign and re-approval procedures.
With numerous potential uses, Alpha Micro's NetPort device has many possible applications, for example within the access control, metering and process control industries Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director, Alpha Micro Components, commented: "When we originally launched NetPort it received a great deal of acclaim from a number of industry leaders, as it allowed them to quickly and easily Internet enable and give network connectivity to existing legacy systems".
"As machine-to-machine communication evolves, so too do the technologies which enable it".
"We have harnessed the power of some of the most cutting edge components and turned them into a workable solution for our customers".
PoE is gaining wide spread popularity due to the flexibility and cost savings it brings.
Moving electronic equipment can often require extensive electrical work to reroute power points to a new locations.
As networking is less costly and time consuming, the cost of deploying PoE compared with traditional electrical infrastructures is far more cost effective.
Papakyriacou concludes: "We've developed NetPort to be more than a simple device server".
"It is now an autonomous and programmable device computing and networking platform".
"NetPort comes with a XML-based architecture and can offer streaming RSS, as well as being fully IEEE803.3af compliant, making it one of the most powerful and useful servers on the market today".
