Wireless modem module gains GPS functionality
Alpha Micro's AMC1802GSXLA dual-band GPRS/GSM embedded radio modem module is now available with optional GPS (Global Positioning System) functionality.
The project will lower the cost of maintaining the network as the new system will enable a central location to analyse, and in the majority of cases, to solve remotely problems that may occur at any site installation.
This will allow Irish Broadband to take the appropriate actions to rectify the fault from the central location or despatch the right service crew if the fault can not be fixed remotely.
It will also reduce the time taken to solve disruptions, thanks to instant alerts when a fault appears.

Offering a wireless broadband service in all major cities in Ireland, Irish Broadband will also benefit from an "out of band network management" system even if the network is down.
This will be made possible thanks to the Lantronix SLC v4 and SLM management box supplied by Alpha Micro Components, which uses an independent power supply and communication channel.
A subsidiary of National Toll Roads (NTR), Irish Broadband has rolled out services to Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Galway, Waterford and other locations, with over 150 sites serving more than 40,000 customers.
The wireless provider will be able to manage its network from a single location within a fraction of the time, reducing maintenance cost, and man hours spent at remote sites.
The wireless provider has plans to install kit to a further 300 sites by 2010.
Alpha Micro was the only company able to offer the fixed IP system for GPRS that Irish Broadband needed for a two-way information flow.
"It was their expertise in Ethernet and most importantly GPRS that was the deciding factor in choosing Alpha Micro", says Ruairi Jennings, Deputy CTO, from Irish Broadband.
"Alpha Micro was also able to provide the complete solution we needed, including local support from their Tipperary division".
Maxine Hewitt, Sales Manager, Alpha Micro Components comments: "This is a significant new customer for Alpha Micro".
"The Irish Broadband contract is a good illustration of the outstanding benefits offered by remote management for service providers and the telecom infrastructure".
