AMI Semiconductor (AMIS) has expanded its family of reprogrammable interface ICs certified for Actuator Sensor-interface (AS-i) bus applications by launching an extended temperature device The new A2SI-E, which incorporates both standard and optical interfaces, operates between -35 and +105C, and will simplify the implementation of industrial automation networks operating in hazardous environments

The AMIS A2SI-E is an advanced AS-i slave IC delivering all of the functionality required to interface sensors, actuators, controllers and other devices to an AS-i network.

This minimises the need for external components and traditional cable tree architectures.

Supplied in a compact 28-pin SOIC package, the A2SI-E is a CMOS-based mixed-signal device featuring integrated EEPROM that allows in-circuit reprogramming and eliminates the need for external memory.

Firmware protection prevents accidental overwriting of the memory area.

An extended address mode operation, as specified in version 2.11 of the AS-i specification, allows the device to be used in an extended network of up to 62 slaves rather than the maximum of 31 typically allowed by conventional devices.

The A2SI-E offers four data input and four data output ports and combines a high-impedance AS-i line input with additional pins for further impedance optimisation.

An integrated infrared interface provides a supplementary communications channel, while a built-in watchdog timer optimises bus security.

Designed for maximum reliability, the A2SI features power fail and thermal protection functionality and facilitates problem diagnosis through an LED status indicator output.

The A2SI-E was developed by AMIS engineers in cooperation with leading customers in the industry at the company's European headquarters and technical centre in Dresden.

Samples are available now, and full production is scheduled for Q4, 2001.
