AMI Semiconductor is setting up a new Medical and Wireless Products Unit.

AMI Semiconductor is setting up a new Medical and Wireless Products Unit The unit will be headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, with additional engineering and support staff located around the world

This move expands the company's strong focus on the medical market, specifically in providing digital signal processing (DSP) capability and leading-edge ASICs and standard products for ultra-low-power medical implant communication systems (MICS) and other medical wireless applications.

The unit will bring together critical mass to address trends in the medical market and to extend AMI Semiconductor's leadership position in the market.

As trends in the medical device market move toward wireless technology, implantable designs are integrating ultra-low-power MICS-band radios.

AMI Semiconductor's new unit is poised to capitalise on this trend by combining ultra-low-power design capabilities including analogue front-end experience, signal processing and low data rate wireless.

AMIS engineers have already designed wireless technology into implantable devices.

The company's ability to combine digital intelligence, analogue and wireless into a single chip strongly differentiates it from competing companies in the medical space.

The unit will include resources gained through the company's recent acquisition of Dspfactory, including its proprietary DSP-based mixed-signal platforms and extensive engineering assets.

"Increasing customer demand for ultra-low power technology played a large role in our decision to create the new unit, as well as our own amplified focus on growing the company's medical business", stated Christine King, President and CEO of AMI Semiconductor.

"We are intensely focused on continuing to strengthen our technical capabilities, and now have all the resources in place to substantially increase our market share over the next few years".

"Combining our DSP, wireless and analogue technology under one umbrella makes this goal a reality for the company".

Robert Tong, former CEO of Dspfactory, will assume the role of Head of the AMIS Medical and Wireless Products Unit that will be an extension of AMI Semiconductor's integrated mixed-signal initiative.

His experience with DSP and wireless technology, as well as his relationships with customers in this field, will provide AMIS with the strong leadership necessary to launch this unit into quick production.

"I am excited by the challenge of this transition to lead the AMIS medical and wireless products unit and look forward to further expanding the company's reputation as a top-tier provider of medical ASICs", said Tong.

"We have brought together an amazing team of design engineers that will expand the company's already robust line of integrated mixed-signal products".

"With our demonstrated capability in developing innovative real-world DSP solutions for our customers and the superior technology and expertise of the integrated entity, we aim to be the trusted provider of quality products for medical device manufacturers around the globe".
