Shipments of AMP Netconnect popular MT-RJ fibre-optic connector have surpassed the three million mark, an increase of 50% in just the past year With over one million new unit shipments of the MT-RJ connector since May 2000, AMP Netconnect continues to be the dominant provider of this industry-leading small-form-factor connector

Small-form-factor connectors such as the MT-RJ are becoming increasingly important as installations of fibre-optic cabling infrastructures continue to grow.

In particular, the MT-RJ connector has played an instrumental role in improving size, ease-of-use, and cost factors affecting fibre-optic cabling installations.

To address ease-of-use and space considerations, the connector maintains a form factor similar to the RJ-45 modular plug and jack at roughly half the size of the SC Duplex connector.

This improved density cuts the required patch-panel and rack space in half, while also providing considerable cost savings.

"The soaring demand for the AMP Netconnect MT-RJ connector is being fuelled by several factors", explains Herb Congdon, director, systems marketing, with AMP Netconnect's parent company Tyco Electronics.

"IT directors and facilities managers are demanding greater densities from connectors to maximise available space in cabinets, cupboards and workstations.

The MT-RJ maintains the greatest density among all small-form-factor connectors.

Customers are also seeking cost savings in all aspects of their cabling plants.

Because of its single-ferrule design, a single MT-RJ connector is less than the cost of two SC or ST connectors".

"Finally, customers are demanding far less complexity in fibre-optic cabling systems.

To address this issue, the MT-RJ connector eliminates many of the installation headaches historically associated with fibre - particularly the use of epoxy, polishing, and specialised tooling.

The end result is vastly simplified and more cost-effective installation".

The increasing adoption rate of Gigabit Ethernet technology is also driving market demand for the MT-RJ connector.

By deploying MT-RJ connectors, customers benefit from increased optical-fibre port density, which reduces the per-port cost of optical networking electronics, including Gigabit Ethernet equipment.

Supporting standard single-mode and multimode fibre-optic cable, the AMP Netconnect MT-RJ connector uses a form factor that is similar to that of its copper counterpart.

Because of their small form factor, MT-RJ connectors double the port density of fibre hubs and patch panels, reducing the size and logistical support requirements for these spaces.

This is significant since component manufacturers of patch panels, wall plates and other infrastructure hardware continue to integrate MT-RJ connectors in their product line with minimal tooling changes.

As a result, end users can migrate to fibre without having to add cabinet or rack space.

"The AMP Netconnect MT-RJ connector products offer a complete end-to-end, small-form-factor optical-fibre solution", Congdon says.

"The fact that more than six million fibres are terminated in MT-RJ demonstrates the popularity of a high-density, easy-to-install, high-performance optical-fibre connector".
