Cable conquers crosstalk concerns

An AMP Netconnect product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Jan 25, 2005

A new copper cabling system aims to overcome alien crosstalk effects in 10Gbit Ethernet installations.

Tyco Electronics has introduced the AMP Netconnect XG copper cabling system for 10Gbit Ethernet applications.

This new twisted-pair system consists of PiMF (pairs in metal foil) shielded cable, shielded connectors, and shielded patch-panel designs that overcome alien crosstalk (ANEXT) effects to fully support the proposed 10GBase-T standard and enable 10Gbit/s transmission over a full 100m channel.

The 10GBase-T standard (IEEE802.3an), currently under development, is targeting an operating frequency of 500MHz.

At this frequency, the signal integrity on existing unshielded (UTP) cabling systems is adversely affected by ANEXT.

Because today's active network equipment cannot cancel ANEXT, the distances over which TIA/EIA-568-B standard compliant UTP can support 10GBase-T are greatly reduced.

The AMP Netconnect XG copper cabling system incorporates an individual pair foil shielding that virtually eliminates ANEXT, resulting in a signal/noise ratio proven to support 10Gbit/s Ethernet data ates over distances of up to 100m.

"According to Shannon's Law, which defines the maximum amount of data transmitted in the presence of noise, existing Category 6 UTP will probably be limited to channel lengths of less than 100m for 10 Gigabit Ethernet", says Eddie Boyce, UK Product Marketing Manager for Tyco Electronics AMP Netconnect Business Unit.

"Today's standards-based network designs demand media that can support the full 100m distance for horizontal channels".

"For those looking for 10-gigabit capacity over a copper system, the AMP Netconnect XG copper cabling system is a proven solution that does just that".

The AMP Netconnect XG copper cabling system has been tested to 625MHz in worst-case scenario installations and has demonstrated a Shannon capacity of greater than 19Gbit/s - nearly twice the capacity of existing Category 6 UTP systems.

The AMP Netconnect XG copper cabling system consists of Category 7 (ISO Class F) PiMF shielded cable, SL 110Connect jacks and 24-port RJ45 patch panels.

It can also be used in conjunction with the AMP Netconnect AMPTRAC connectivity management system for intelligent networks.

Tyco Electronics has the largest installed base of shielded systems throughout much of the world.
