Compact power solution protects multiple racks

American Power Conversion (APC) has expanded its field-proven, award-winning Symmetra Power Array line of fully scalable and redundant power protection solutions with the new Symmetra rack-mount (RM), available in sizes ranging from 8kVA-12kVA N+1 (or 16kVA N only).

Designed to safeguard mission-critical servers, networking and telecomms equipment, the new Symmetra RM can be fully managed through an integrated web/SNMP management card, allowing the unit to be easily integrated into a customer's present IT management strategy.

This novel, rack-optimised unit is built to protect single or multiple racks from power anomalies and outages and occupies only 15U of vertical rack space to conserve premium floor space, making it an ideal solution for service provider, colocator and data centre environments.

The Symmetra RM's architecture is similar to the design of RAID (redundant array of independent drives) technology that offers complete redundancy to every critical component of the system.

This design consists of a rack-mount frame with slots that house both power and battery modules that share the load, as well as a main intelligence module and a redundant intelligent module so that if any single module fails, the others seamlessly pick up the load and output power remains uninterrupted.

When configured for N+1 redundancy, facilities and data centre managers can rest assured that their load is fully protected, while achieving redundancy at all levels of the network.

A critical feature is the fact that the new Symmetra RM ships with user serviceable hot-swappable, preinstalled modules, reducing total installation time and costs associated with installing or servicing the Symmetra RM.

Also, when it becomes necessary to increase power capacity or runtime, additional modules can be added at any time, eliminating the need for expensive service contracts and system oversizing.

Symmetra RM's combination of redundancy, scalability, and serviceability makes it one of the highest available rack-mount power protection systems on the market today.

The Symmetra RM includes APC's web/SNMP management card, as well as APC's award-winning PowerChute network shutdown software.

The web/SNMP management card gives users the ability to remotely identify potential problems and proactively manage all APC devices via a web browser.

By allowing remote mass configurations to be set up over the network, the integrated web/SNMP management card reduces installation time, providing a flexible and convenient power management solution for mission critical networking equipment.
