Monitor and keyboard cram into 1U-high panel
American Power Conversion (APC) has released an all-in-one, 1U rack-mount LCD monitor/keyboard drawer.
As a result, APC is transitioning away from stand-alone DC systems and components, but will continue to provide product support to its existing DC system customers.
With the convergence of voice, video and data, this integrated approach helps guarantee compatibility and results in lower costs.
The system can be integrated into the IT row with APC's new wide NetShelter VX racks that are available for "cable-dense" VoIP and telecommunications applications.
In addition, battery costs are minimised as all critical AC and DC loads can share a central battery that provides reserve time.
DC power systems use switch mode power supply technology, via rectifiers, to convert utility voltage in alternating current or AC into predominately 48V DC to power system loads and charge batteries.
Uninterruptible power supplies utilising battery backup ensure availability of DC-powered devices during a utility supply failure.
Depending on application usage, most data centre DC power loads are in the 5-400A range.
Common data centre DC power applications include private branch exchanges (PBXs), VoIP switches, T1/T3/fibre customer premise equipment (CPE) interface boxes, and high density blade server racks.
"The expansion of APC's InfraStruXure to DC signifies continued commitment to research and development of high quality, integrated, and scalable DC power solutions that help solve problems encountered with powering DC equipment in the NCPI", said Michael Adams, UK and Ireland Country Manager, APC.
"These systems, available for installation worldwide, are easily integrated with APC's InfraStruXure architecture that helps increase availability, improve adaptability and reduce costs".
APC's Magnum series DC systems feature a built-in web/SNMP management capability that allows network managers to proactively manage and monitor the unit over a network or remotely via the web.
As a result, network managers now can obtain status information and access data and event logs via their web browser or network management system.
Also, maintenance can be scheduled giving the network manager the piece of mind that the system is operating properly, saving both time and money by reducing the number of on-site maintenance visits.
APC's Magnum series DC systems are currently available up to 100A worldwide.
They will be available up to 450A in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa in the third quarter of 2004 and available in North America later this year.
Estimated resale pricing in Europe for a Magnum XS base system starts at Eur 4803, or approximately US $5800.
