High security for residential gateway design
Amino Communications has developed a residential gateway reference design with a novel security architecture.
Amino is also aiming at OEMs who want to enter new markets but prefer to license the technology rather than design from scratch.
The ASTB Reference Design is based on Amino's modular IntAct architecture which provides unprecedented flexibility during the design process.
Set-top boxes based on Amino's technology provide video-on-demand (up to and above 7Mbit/s MPEG-2 ), broadcast TV and web browsing.
Other services such as e-mail, videoconferencing and IP telephony are all possible thanks to Amino's modular approach.
Further functionality including dedicated gaming, DVD drives and home networking can be added at any time.
"Where time to market must be measured in months, not years, the ASTB Reference Design provides the fastest route to market for our licensees", said Martyn Gilbert, CEO of Amino Communications.
"First mover advantage is key here because without Amino, companies are in grave danger of not being able to react fast enough to changing market conditions".
Amino designed STBs are the only STBs to have security built-in from day one thus protecting the revenue streams for content providers.
Services such as pay-per-view, home shopping and access control can be controlled by the integrated smartcard reader.
IntAct provides security in the underlying architecture, all the other players simply add cryptography (all too often hacked) on top of a conventional design.
The ASTB Reference Design supports cable, DSL or satellite networks.
Amino plans to support the Multimedia Home Platform by mid 2001 giving its customers a standard platform onto which interactive content and electronic programming guides can easily be ported.
To accommodate varying requirements, Amino licenses the reference design as a package of IP components.
Each major piece of functionality comprises a self-contained building block which can be included in the unit as required.
