Amino to embed Java in consumer e-business systems
Amino Communications has developed a Java environment aimed at the embedded systems market - set-top boxes, PDAs, gateways, seat-back entertainment and telematics devices.
Codenamed IntActMoon, the new technology will be based on Vulcan's Moon processor, incorporating Amino's patent pending IntAct architecture.
The resulting combination significantly increases the flexibility of the Moon processor by enabling other devices to be added without the need to port device drivers.
This approach enables Java embedded systems, for example within set top boxes, home gateways, and wireless applications, to be brought to market in a matter of months rather than years.
The Moon processor has clear advantages over Java virtual machines (JVM) and just-in-time (JIT) compilers used for running Java applications.
The JVM is slow as it interprets Java code in real time; but in contrast, because Moon is a native Java processor, applications are executed ten times faster than a JVM.
Although the JIT compiler runs applications fast because instructions to the processor are compiled ahead of time, it requires extra memory on the Java chip.
Moon does not require any extra memory for compiled code - only what the program needs.
Martyn Gilbert, CEO of Amino commented: "The speeds and memory typically needed to compile Java code are often prohibitive and ill-suited to low-power mobile applications in particular.
To realise the potential benefits of a Java embedded system you need something capable of exploiting the standard platform that Java represents but without the downside.
Using a Java processor rather than a JIT compiler or JVM makes much more sense - the whole system works much more efficiently and at greatly improved speeds.
Taking this one step further, Amino's IntAct technology will enable the rapid deployment of Vulcan's product and a very fast time to market for Java embedded systems".
