IPTV to boost broadband market

Amino Communications has developed a Java environment aimed at the embedded systems market - set-top boxes, PDAs, gateways, seat-back entertainment and telematics devices.
IPTV uses ordinary ADSL broadband connections to provide television content via Ethernet to subscribers who benefit from the flexibility of being able to view content on demand or time shift it with a personal video recorder (PVR).
Until now, the growth of IPTV has been limited by the relatively high cost of STBs but Amino feels that the AmiNet100 will change this situation radically.
Bob Giddy, Amino's CEO, stated, "The take up of IPTV has been relatively slow, chiefly because of the high cost of the set-top boxes.
However, new generation STBs specifically designed for this market, such as our AmiNet100 product, have a cost low enough to make IPTV a very attractive proposition for telecomms operators and content providers.
We are confident that they will see this as the next major broadband opportunity".
The AmiNet100 is the industry's smallest, most integrated and price competitive set-top box and measures only 75 x 75 x 9mm.
It is specifically designed to meet demanding IP-based multimedia distribution requirements in the both the consumer market as well as the hospitality, education, healthcare and retail sectors.
It features a range of web and audio/video capabilities that enable it to manage many functions within different markets.
The unit can easily be connected to existing networks to allow quick and simple installations, and it incorporates an industry standard HTML 4 compliant browser that can be used to integrate shared files within the different environments.
Its combination of networking with digital audio/video decoding also enables on-line services to be accessed for training and learning or entertainment purposes.
