Using the well-received NPort Express DE-311, a single channel serial to Ethernet convertor, which may be integrated with any serial device, connected into a wireless LAN access point - in this case the LiveLAN-1300 - it is possible to transmit data via wireless to a PC at an entirely different location.
An integrated WLAN PCMCIA card, the LiveLAN-1100, communicates with the access point to enable the data to be read by the PC.
In this way, data may be collected from any serial device, converted to wireless and sent to a PC for analysing.
All without the need for installing twisted pair cabling.
This greatly increases user mobility and cuts installation costs.
This solution is ideal for legacy network communication protocols such as RS232, RS422 and RS485.
Software provided gives a live signal strength indicator, which can be displayed in the system tray, a very useful function when carrying out low cost site surveys.
The LiveLAN-1100 PCMCIA card is fully compliant with the 802.11b protocol, and has a data transfer rate of up to 11Mbit/s.
A USB version is also available.
Drivers for Windows 98/ME/2000 and XP are provided for the roaming serial communication solution.
Wireless LAN is also ideal for basic network infrastructure extensions, typically when extra PCs are needed in remote locations or when the ability to communicate with a network whilst on the move is required.
