Manufacturing and engineering union Amicus has welcomed a Government commissioned report on the future of the UK electronics industry.

Manufacturing and engineering union Amicus has welcomed a Government commissioned report on the future of the UK electronics industry.

Amicus says it supports the Electronics Innovation and Growth Team (EIGT) report commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry, which identifies ways to support and promote the UK's electronics industry.

The EIGT report stresses the need for greater investment in the electronics industry, more opportunities for UK based electronics companies to benefit from public contracts and the need to address skills shortages in science and technology.

Amicus also say action is also needed to improve employee diversity in the electronics sector.

Amicus Assistant General Secretary and trade union representative on the Electronics Innovation Growth Team, Paul Talbot, said: "This report points the way forward for the electronics industry".

"To beat the competition we need more co-operation between Government, industry, higher education and the trade bodies to create a 'UK win' attitude".

"We need to improve the industry's image and working conditions and make it more attractive for women and young people".

Amicus' next step will be to raise the issues identified in the report with companies where it has membership and with regional development agencies.
