The latest addition to the Analog Devices Crosscore family of DSP development tools is a high-performance PCI-based emulator for the company's JTAG DSPs.

The latest addition to the Analog Devices Crosscore family of DSP development tools is a high-performance PCI-based emulator for the company's JTAG DSPs, which include all Blackfin, SHARC, TigerSHARC and ADSP-219x devices The new high performance PCI-based emulator offers code download speeds of up to 2.2Mbyte/s, with the JTAG interface clocked five times faster than its predecessor, and adds seamless exchange of real-time data from the host to the target application

The new emulator is tightly integrated with ADI's VisualDSP++ integrated development environment, offering programmers seamless and rapid transition from development in a simulation environment to target hardware debugging.

As ADI's new high performance PCI-based emulator downloads code at up to 2.2Mbyte/s, engineers are now able to test their applications in a fraction of the time, by gathering data samples ten times faster than before, thereby dramatically improving the load-execute-monitor-modify development cycle(s).

This new level of performance is achieved by innovative emulator technology that also permits the JTAG to be clocked five times faster than previous emulator generations.

The increased speed enables engineers to run more test vectors in a shorter amount of time and create a more robust product.

The background telemetry channel (BTC) feature is a mechanism for exchanging data between a host and target application, with minimal intrusion on the target systems "real-time" characteristics.

The principle for data exchange is a shared group of registers that both the host and the target have read/write access to while the application is running.

BTC enables real-time data collection and status messaging, and in the process eliminates the overhead involved with halting the target application, getting the desired information, and then restarting the target application.

BTC is currently supported on ADI's ADSP-219x DSP family as well as ADI's Blackfin DSP family with VisualDSP++ release 3.0.

The new emulator consists of a small-shielded pod and cable allowing for a nonintrusive debug interface to all the ADI JTAG DSPs.

The high performance PCI-based emulator auto-detects voltages for 1.8, 2.5, 3.3 and 5.0V targets as indicated by the display LEDs.

The cable assembly has been extended to 6ft from the host PC to the emulator pod, and 1ft from the pod to DSP target, helping to reduce clutter in the hardware lab.

ADI's PCI-based emulator supports all ADI JTAG DSPs such as the ADSP-219x, Blackfin DSP, SHARC DSP and TigerSHARC DSP families and is CE compliant.

The high performance PCI-based emulator will be available in December 2002, priced at $4000.

Until 3rd June 2003 ADI will be offering an emulator trade-in programme.

Customers can trade-in an ADI Summit-ICE PCI emulator or Apex-ICE USB emulator for a $2500.00 credit towards the purchase of the new high performance PCI-based emulator.
