Analog Devices, Sierra Wireless and TTPCom have teamed up to bring wireless Edge (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) capabilities to laptop computers and PDAs.

Analog Devices, Sierra Wireless and TTPCom have teamed up to bring wireless Edge (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) capabilities to laptop computers and PDAs Sierra Wireless, the world's leading manufacturer of cellular PC card modems, has selected ADI's Blackfin SoftFone for Edge Platform and TTPCom's protocol stack software, to power its new AirCard 775 PC Card for the Edge network

The new wireless wide area network (WWAN) card will enable mobile users to enjoy higher speed data access while reaching speeds up to three times faster than currently available on existing GPRS networks.

About the size of a credit card, the Sierra Wireless AirCard 775 is a Class 12 PC Card and the newest addition to the award winning AirCard PC Card series.

The AirCard 775 is ideal for mobile professionals who are heavy data users as it allows them to send and receive data at speeds averaging between 100 and 130Kbit/s.

The quad-band design (850/900/1800/1900MHz) also enables mobile users to roam globally on both Edge and GPRS networks.

The new Sierra Wireless AirCard 775 - powered by ADI's Blackfin SoftFone for Edge and TTPCom software - is planned for availability the third quarter of 2004.

Analog Devices' Blackfin SoftFone for Edge platform is the world's first completely RAM-based chipset for the Edge standard, and incorporates breakthrough advancements in power consumption, cost and size.

The platform supports Class 12 Edge complete with full four-transmit-slot and four-receive-slot operation to ensure the fastest speeds available for sending and receiving data.

In addition, the platform is based on ADI's Blackfin processor, which provides the signal processing performance and low power consumption required for advanced portable devices.

TTPCom's Edge software is fully integrated with the ADI platform and, with industry leading datarates reaching up to 216Kbit/s, it enables manufacturers to develop products that fully use Edge networks and facilitates the early deployment of 3G type services.

TTPCom's Edge software also builds on a proven GSM/GPRS base and during 2003 has undergone extensive interoperability testing with leading infrastructure providers, test equipment vendors and wireless operators.

"Our partnership with global industry leaders like Analog Devices and TTPCom ensures we continue to offer one of the most advanced wide-area PC Card products in the market", said Jason Cohenour, Senior Vice President Sales for Sierra Wireless.

"We remain committed to offering an extensive line of wireless data solutions that offer fast and easy access to new and expanding wireless networks.

The new AirCard 775 continues a long and successful tradition for Sierra Wireless of offering innovative mobile solutions that our valued customers have come to depend on".

"Sierra Wireless has used Analog Devices' SoftFone platform for years to bring wide-area wireless Internet access to laptop users worldwide", said Christian Kermarrec, Vice President, RF and Wireless Systems, Analog Devices.

"Recognised worldwide as an industry leader in wireless communication solutions, Sierra Wireless's adoption of our proven Blackfin SoftFone for Edge platform further validates the high-performance, low-power and cost benefits it offers over alternative solutions".

"Sierra Wireless has always been on the leading edge of technology implementation, demanding extreme performance and quality from its technology partners", said Richard Walker, Managing Director of the Software Division at TTPCom.

"The development of the newest addition to the AirCard family has been very swift and Sierra Wireless will be one of the first to launch an Edge capable product.

The speed of development demonstrates that TTPCom's proven software, dedicated technical support and extensive interoperability testing deliver real time to market benefits for our customers".
