ADI's Blackfin SoftFone for Edge Platform was the world's first open-market Edge chipset and is completely RAM-based, allowing Quanta to easily customise user features and options entirely in software for a wide range of phones, while incorporating breakthrough advancements in power consumption, cost and size.
In addition, the platform is based on ADI's Blackfin Processor, which combines best-in-class digital signal processing performance with microcontroller functionality in a single instruction-set architecture to deliver the industry's highest performance for a low-power embedded processor.
ADI's Blackfin processor provides the signal processing performance and low power consumption required for advanced portable devices, while providing the processing power needed to run multimedia applications such as high quality audio, video and streaming media without the need to incorporate a separate applications processor.
"Edge is the first real technology that enables effective deployment on existing GSM networks for compelling applications such as multimedia transfer from mobile-to-mobile or video download.
As an existing provider of camera phones, it is a natural move for Quanta to develop Edge multimedia devices", said Georges Boulloy, Senior Vice President, Wireless Business Unit of Quanta.
"In the past few months, we have seen a tremendous upsurge in the demand for Edge handsets and ODMs such as Quanta will play a key role in enabling the fast adoption of this technology", said Christian Kermarrec, Vice President, RF and Wireless Systems, Analog Devices.
"Quanta is widely recognised as the world's leading PC notebook manufacturer and handset ODM, and today's announcement will be especially beneficial to handset brands looking for the fastest path to developing an Edge product.
ADI's chipsets have powered Quanta's GSM/GPRS handsets for years and the company migrated to our Edge terminal chipsets because of their ease of use and unsurpassed levels of performance, flexibility and support".
"It is clear that Edge has significant market momentum and the availability of Edge-capable handsets is becoming a critical factor in deployment", said Will Strauss, President of Forward Concepts.
"The partnership between Quanta and ADI can help meet the market need because, as an experienced ODM, Quanta can enable branded handset companies who have been late to invest in Edge to now get products to the market quickly".
Quanta new line of Edge-capable devices featuring ADI's Blackfin SoftFone for Edge chipset will be available by the end of 2004.
