In addition to auto security alarms, the ADXL213 is well suited for a wide range of consumer, industrial, and military applications where precise and reliable tilt measurement is required.
They include: motion detectors that sense small changes in tilt angles or displacements; electronic braking systems; precision navigation systems such as compass tilt correction and GPS supplement (dead reckoning); stability compensation for industrial equipment such as cranes, fork lifts, tank turrets and work platforms; physiological monitoring (medical instrumentation/diagnostic equipment); and stabilisation/tilt correction for antenna systems.
The ADXL213 is a precision, low power, complete dual-axis accelerometer with signal conditioned, duty cycle modulated outputs, all on a single monolithic IC.
Requiring only 0.7mA, the ADXL213 measures acceleration with a full-scale range of +/-1.2g (typical) and is capable of measuring both dynamic acceleration (eg vibration) and static acceleration (eg gravity).
The outputs are digital signals whose duty cycles (ratio of pulse width to period) are proportional to acceleration (30%/g).
The duty cycle outputs can be directly measured by a microcontroller.
The ADXL213 improves on the ADXL202 in two critical specifications: zero-g stability over temperature and sensitivity.
Innovative design techniques are used to ensure high zero g bias stability (typically better than 0.25mg/C), as well as tight sensitivity stability (typically better than 50ppm/C).
The typical noise floor is 160ug/(rt)Hz, allowing signals below 1mg (0.06 degree of inclination) to be resolved in tilt sensing applications using narrow bandwidths (less than 60Hz).
Bandwidths of 0.5 to 250Hz may be selected to suit the application.
The ADXL213 is available in a 5 x 5 x 2mm 8-pad hermetic LCC package, and is priced at $5.50 in quantities of 10,000 units.
The ADXL213 is now available in full production.
