ICs cover full cellular signal chain

With evolving standards and shifting consumer needs, the demand for flexibility and upgradeability in cellular equipment is stronger now than for any generation of service before 3G.
This week at the 3G World Congress tradeshow in Hong Kong, Analog Devices has unveiled two complete chipset solutions for 3G handset applications.
The new SoftFone-LCR chipset supports the TD-SCDMA LCR (low chip rate) standard, and the SoftFone-W chipset supports the W-CDMA/UMTS standard, which includes multimode support for W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/Edge.

These solutions are based on the successful SoftFone architecture, which gives designers the flexibility to create many different phone models from the same basic platform.
In basestations, designers are using software-defined radio (SDR) technology to create flexible transceivers and flexible baseband solutions.
ADI's high-performance Softcell data convertor technology is a critical enabler of SDR and its TigerSHARC processor is the first and only processor capable of implementing a 3G software-defined digital base band.
With a software programmable digital baseband, the same basestation platform can be easily adapted for use in multiple regions of the world, and can be upgraded to support new capabilities such as high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA).
