A new comprehensive embedded systems development and evaluation platform will significantly simplify and speed the design, prototyping and testing of Windows CE and Linux-based applications.

Anders Electronics has released a comprehensive embedded systems development and evaluation platform that will significantly simplify and speed the design, prototyping and testing of Windows CE and Linux-based applications.

The new Hurricane Evaluation Kit combines the latest ARM-based system-on-module (SOM) technology with a high-resolution, 6.4in TFT LCD, a preloaded operating system, and a variety of supporting hardware, software and documentation, to provide a comprehensive "out-of-box-ready" development platform.

As standard, the Hurricane Evaluation Kit from Anders Electronics is supplied with Windows CE or Linux pre-installed.

Alternatively, the company can offer custom images or a Windows CE board support package (BSP) for customers with Platform Builder.

At the heart of the Hurricane Evaluation Kit is the Anders Electronics CM-X255 ARM-based SOM (formerly known as the best-selling ARMCORE-GX).

Measuring just 66 x 44mm, this low power module has a smaller footprint than a credit card yet integrates a 400MHz Intel XScale CPU, 64Mbyte of 100MHz SDRAM, 128Mbyte of NAND Flash and 4Mbyte of NOR Flash memory with a comprehensive set of controllers, peripherals and interfaces.

The Hurricane Evaluation Kit combines the CM-X255 module with a PC/104 baseboard, a 6.4in LG Philips VGA TFT display with backlight inverter, a power supply and all necessary cabling, documentation and software.

The Anders Electronics CM-X255 miniature SOM incorporates a graphics controller, one synchronous and six asynchronous serial ports, a parallel port, IrDA and USB connectivity, interfaces for PCMCIA, 100Mbit/s Ethernet and external disks, a printer port, a touchscreen controller, audio output capability and a PS/2 keyboard and mouse controller.

In addition to a local bus, the CM-X255 provides PCI and LPC buses for interfacing to offboard peripherals.

In the case of the Hurricane Evaluation Kit, Anders has added a PC/104 sized baseboard that features PC/104+ headers for ISA and PCI connectivity.

This baseboard offers a secondary 100Base-TX Ethernet port, two PCMCIA slots, and an analogue RGB display output.

The Hurricane Evaluation Kit is supplied in a protective carrying case containing the CM-X255 SOM, the PC/104 base board, the TFT LCD module, a universal power supply and a full set of I/O cables for standard connectors.

Full documentation and a CD containing a range of support software are also provided.
