Tester checks 3G basestations at 100km/h

Anritsu has enhanced the MS269xA signal analyser with four new functions, including spectrogram and spurious emission measurement functions.
The ML8720B's measurement functions include received signal code power (RSCP), the ratio of desired receive power per chip to receive power density in the band (Ec/No), and signal interference ratio (SIR), all of which are used to evaluate the strength of the radio signal received from each basestation; and the delay profile, which is used to evaluate the delay characteristics of the signal caused by multipath propagation.
RSCP, Ec/No and SIR can all be measured at 30cm intervals while travelling at 100km/h in a monitoring vehicle, to provide fast and accurate area analysis.
In addition a time/distance variation display is also available to show how the received signal level is changing with respect to relative position.

New option allows both active testing with one transmitter and one receiver and simultaneous bidirectional monitoring of SDH lines with two receivers up to STM-16 speeds.
This is ideal for investigating soft-handoff operations.
The measured data can be correlated with GPS positioning data and saved to a memory card.
Also, the measured data and positioning information can be downloaded in real time to an external PC via the RS232 interface.
It can then be used in conjunction with other software, such as mapping systems, to allow evaluation linked to area maps.
The ML8720B has two measurement modes: unspecified and specified basestation.
The common pilot indication channel (CPICH) is measured in both modes.
In unspecified basestation measurement mode, measurement is performed without knowing the basestation scrambling code, so any basestation in the area will be measured; in specified basestation measurement mode, the scrambling code is known, so measurements are performed on a specified basestation.
When used in combination with the optional diversity function, even higher-accuracy measurements, such as CPICH transmit diversity format and receive antenna diversity, can be performed.
In addition to stand-alone measurement using a single unit, several ML8720Bs can be connected as one master and several slaves, permitting parallel master/slave measurements.
Separate measurement channels can be specified for each ML8720B to greatly reduce the initial code detection time.
Weighing only 4kg, the ML8720B is easily portable, making it suitable for a wide range of measurement tasks that are difficult or impossible for current desktop testers.
The unit's lithium-ion battery pack provides more than 3h of operation, and spare battery packs are available to increase this time if needed.
Large amounts of measured data can be saved to flash memory cards with up to 256Mbyte capacity.
The 8.4in colour LCD is easy to view under any lighting conditions.
