Microchip's new regulated charge pump DC/DC convertors provide a space-saving, power management solution for DC/DC conversions in a battery-operated environment The MCP1252 and MCP1253, 120mA regulated charge pump devices, require fewer external components than many other charge pump devices and, unlike switching regulators, do not require an inductor

These devices provide either a fixed 3.3or 5.0V output or an adjustable output voltage of 1.5 to 5.5V from a 2.7 to 5.5V input source.

They have a low drain current of 60uA, a shutdown current of 0.1uA and offer a power-good output that can detect an out-of-regulation situation with an output voltage accuracy of +/-2.5% maximum, 0.5% typical.

Unlike low-dropout regulators, these devices offer a DC/DC conversion method that automatically operates in buck and boost modes, allowing input voltage to be higher or lower than output voltage.

The devices are ideal for compact battery-operated systems such as cellphones, PDAs, MP3 players and wireless controllers.

The MCP1252 has an operating frequency of 650kHz that can avoid critical system frequencies, while the MCP1253 operates at 1.0MHz and minimises the external component size.

The devices also offer internal thermal and short-circuit protection.

The MCP1252 and MCP1253 are available in 8-pin MSOP and are specified over a temperature range of -40 to +85C.
