Easy interfacing to faster microcontrollers
Microchip has added two new devices to its PIC16C92X family of 8bit one-time-programmable microcontrollers with integrated liquid-crystal display controller.
The kit includes all of the hardware, software source-code (including free software stack) and printed circuit board (PCB) layout files needed to rapidly prototype wireless products.
A detailed application note is available on Microchip's website.
This development platform is based on Microchip's PIC18 high-performance 8bit microcontroller family, which supports ZigBee applications with a selection of over 30 products with 32 to 128Kbyte of Flash program memory in 28- to 80-pin packages.
The PICDEM Z platform uses the PIC18LF4620 microcontroller with integrated nanoWatt Technology power-managed modes, 64Kbyte of self-programmable Flash program memory, and advanced analogue, control and communications peripherals.
The platform also incorporates Chipcon's CC2420 2.4GHz RF transceiver.
The CC2420 transceiver easily interfaces to the PIC18 via the SPI port, providing a cost-effective, highly integrated ZigBee node.
Additional PICDEM Z features include: support for reduced function device (RFD) and full function device (FFD); RF transceiver and PCB antenna; modular software design with co-operative multitasking architecture; and the design is RTOS independenct.
Microchip's PICDEM Z platform and ZigBee software stack is supported by the company's full suite of MPLAB development tools, including the MPLAB integrated development environment (IDE) and MPLAB C18 C compiler.
The PICDEM Z 2.4GHz development platform is available for order now and production shipment is expected at the end of December.
The PICDEM Z 2.4GHz demonstration kit includes two motherboards, two RF cards, and a CD containing the ZigBee protocol software and a PCB layout database.
